22. Truth in Prayer

Truth is a transformative, life-giving force. Living in confusing times, it would be wise to include praying about aspects of truth as part of our regular prayer lives. Pray that we may be lovers of truth, seekers of truth, and speakers of truth. We may thank God for truth’s transformative power and plead for truth to be sought, discovered, and revealed. We may pray this for ourselves, for our children and loved ones, for our churches, and for the leaders of nations.
Remember the five metaphors of truth (Wildlife Researcher’s three mini-parables and two later metaphors) and turn these into prayers.
- Truth is coffee.
- Truth is a mountain peak.
- Truth is a cube.
- Truth is light.
- Truth is a Person.
The following page is an example of how it could be done.
Truth Is Like Coffee
- Praise God for the impenetrable vastness of truth, its depth, height, and width.
- Thank him for the knowability of truth, even to little children.
- Ask that we may be on a lifelong journey of discovering truth, ever deeper and wider, especially from God’s Word.
- Pray that we may grow in humility as we understand how little we know.
The Truth Cube
I. Technical and scientific truth
- Honor God as the author of all the rules of physics and chemistry, composer of the sequences of maths and music.
- Praise him as the powerful Mighty One.
- Ask Him for the strength, knowledge, and insight we need for the tasks he called us to do.
II. Personal and subjective truth
- Praise God as the source of mercy and lovingkindness.
- Honor God as the fountain of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and self-control.
- Remember: God is love.
- Ask Him to transform us so that we may love as he loves.
III. Moral and ethical truth
- Honor God as the One who is holy, holy, holy.
- Praise him as the source of all that is pure and good.
- Ask Him to give us a deep desire to mirror his holiness.
- Take off any masks and pretences and confess personal wrongdoing.
- Confess the sins of our loved ones, our church, and our nation.
- Ask God to forgive and purify us.
The Mountain Peak
- Thank God that He became a man and saw things from the human side.
- Pray that we may desire to walk around the mountain to meet people where they are.
- Ask that we may be able to look at our own lives from the perspective of others.
- Plead that we may be able to look at our own lives from the perspective revealed to us in Scripture.
Truth Is Light
- Remember: light does not add but transforms.
- Ask for mercy to hold on to both truth and love without compromising on either.
- Plead for Godly transformation and the kind of truth that transforms.
- Pray that we may follow Christ in living sacrificially and may lay down our lives for others.
Truth Is a Person
- Praise Him for being the Truth.
- Plead that we will seek more than “truths.”
- Ask that we may hunger after Him who is the Truth and source of truth.
- Pray that we may bear his image and be persons of truth.
Searching Scripture
- Prayerfully search God’s Word and test this summary and prayer outline.
- Adapt this summary and make it your own.
- May we become lifelong seekers, lovers, and sharers of truth.
